Your main bedroom should work for the way you start and finish the day. Space to move, useful storage and well-placed controls can matter as much as the finishes you choose.
Before deciding how the room will look, think about your furniture and routine. These five ideas will help you bring the practical details into the design.
1. Put the furniture on the plan
Check the dimensions of your bed, bedside tables and any other pieces you want to bring. Look at the room to walk around them, open drawers and use doors comfortably.
Think about where a door opens and how you reach the wardrobe or ensuite. A floor area alone does not tell you how the layout will feel.
2. Make storage suit your belongings
Look at what you need to hang, fold or store, and compare that with the wardrobe arrangement. Shelves, drawers and hanging space serve different purposes.
Consider where linen or other items will go too. Our space planning guide helps you think about storage across the home.
3. Consider privacy and sound
Think about the bedroom's relationship with the living area, entry, neighbouring homes and outdoor spaces. Discuss window placement and the way the household uses nearby rooms.
Ask what can be addressed in the design and specification. Your site and the whole layout need to be part of the conversation.
4. Plan light and controls
Consider daylight, privacy and window coverings together. Think about lighting for reading, getting ready and moving through the room.
Talk through switches, outlets and heating controls with the team so their positions suit the agreed furniture layout. Confirm what is included and what would be an extra.
5. Give the ensuite its own attention
If the room has an ensuite, check movement, door positions, storage and ventilation. Our bathroom design guide helps you work through those choices.
Coordinate related selections rather than deciding each fitting in isolation.
