Your kitchen might be a place for quick weekday meals, shared cooking or long conversations around the island. The best starting point for its design is how you will actually use it.
Before choosing the benchtop or cabinet colour, think about movement, storage and the equipment you use most. Getting those details clear helps the finishes sit within a kitchen that works for your household.
Describe your kitchen routine
Think about who cooks, how many people use the space at once and what happens around mealtimes. Do you need somewhere for homework, visitors or everyday appliances?
Explain what works in your current kitchen and what you would like to change. That gives the designer a useful brief to work from.
Check the space around the island
An island can serve several purposes, but it needs to fit the room. Check the routes around it, opening cupboards and appliances, seating and access to neighbouring spaces.
Place the furniture and appliances on the plan rather than relying only on an impression from a picture or showhome. Ask the team to explain the proposed dimensions.
Make storage specific
List pots, dishes, food, small appliances and other items you want the kitchen to hold. Think about where each will be used and how easily you want to reach it.
Compare drawers, shelves and cupboards with those needs. Useful storage is about the arrangement as well as the amount.
Coordinate appliances and services
Confirm the actual appliance models, dimensions and installation requirements. Discuss plumbing, electrical and ventilation arrangements with the project team.
A change in appliance or location can affect other work. Ask about the full cost and timing before agreeing to it.
Look at materials and care together
Consider cabinetry, benchtops, flooring and nearby finishes as a group. Look at samples where possible and read the recommended care instructions.
Choose with your household's use in mind, as well as the appearance you enjoy. Our selections guide can help you organise the decisions.
Check what you are approving
Read the final drawings and specification together. Confirm finishes, fittings, lighting, appliances and what is included in the agreed price.
Keep a clear record of approved choices and changes so the team is working from the same information.
Gather ideas you can explain
Visit Classic Builders showhomes and note the practical features you like. Check how the display compares with your project, then bring the ideas into your design brief.
