Five Practical Tips for New-Build Bathroom Design

31.03.2024

A bathroom should work well on a busy morning and feel comfortable when you have time to slow down. The layout and everyday details matter just as much as the finishes.

Before choosing tiles or tapware, think about who will use the room, what needs storing and how easy it will be to care for. These five starting points can help you shape the design.

1. Walk through the layout

Consider the shower, vanity, toilet and door together. Check how people will move around the room and whether doors or drawers compete for the same space.

Think about whether the bathroom is shared, used by visitors or part of a private bedroom area. Bring any particular access needs into the design conversation early.

2. Give everyday things a home

List what you want close at hand: toiletries, towels, hair tools, cleaning products and other items used in the room.

Check the proposed drawers, cupboards and shelving against that list. A vanity that looks generous may not have the storage arrangement you need.

Consider where towels can dry and where items can sit without crowding the benchtop.

3. Plan for moisture

Ask how ventilation, waterproofing and the chosen finishes are addressed in the design and specification. These need to suit the actual room and how it will be used.

Make sure you understand the operation and care instructions for the installed systems. The technical details belong alongside the choices about appearance.

4. Think about cleaning and upkeep

Look at surfaces, joints, fittings and the places that will need regular cleaning. Compare the care instructions for the products you like.

Ask yourself whether the routine feels manageable. A finish can look beautiful and still need more attention than you want to give it.

5. Check the final specification

Confirm the selected fixtures, models, shower finish, vanity and storage. Check lighting and electrical details with the project team.

Ask which choices are included and which are upgrades. Agree the complete cost and any timing effect before approving a change.

Make room for your particular needs

If access, reach or ease of use is important, explain what would help. Do not rely on a general floor plan to answer those details.
